I had a girlfriend in college make me baklava from scratch, dough and all. She made one mistake that made the whole thing even better - she used salted butter.

Not very healthy, but I remember it was amazing. The salt enhanced the nut flavor.

Barrett- Awesome, I would love to see someone make filo from scratch. At $2.89 per 1# box I thought it a wise use of money and time. There's a company here in the area that makes light as feather pistachio baklava that I now have a new found respect for.

Oh trust me, this was a one-time thing. She never made filo from scratch again. I think she just wanted to prove to herself that she could.

I always buy the frozen filo myself.
